Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser Movie Review

Not having seen the original Joe Dirt from 2001, I subjected myself to an afternoon of partaking both films back to back. While I love movies and writing about movies, there are some films that make me want to take up something else like underwater basket weaving. Joe Dirt and Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser are two such films. These are painful films to watch. I was frankly stunned at just how inept, awkward and downright creepy these films are. I laughed a total of TWO times in Joe Dirt and ONCE in Joe Dirt 2, so needless to say, these are two films I will NEVER, EVER watch again. You can file these right along with any of the Sharknado films. Yes, they are both that bad. As critics, we are supposed to start out with the positives of a film so I will do that, here. I like the actors that are in these films. They are accomplished and seem like decent people. There, that is my positive point. There are some films that defy much grace and forgiveness, though. Joe Dirt and Joes Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser are two such films.

In these atrocities, David Spade is the title character. He is a hapless loser with a ridiculous mullet and the apparent brain cells of a field mouse. In the original he was on a quest to find his parents who left him at the Grand Canyon. In the Joe Dirt 2 he is transported back in time and must get back to the present to his new wife and three children. At least the first Joe Dirt had a reasonable plot, whereas, Joe Dirt 2 has a plot that was pulled out of the dumpster of bad ideas. The viewers are forced to sit through scenes of flatulence (which can be funny if done correctly) and parodies of much better films, like Forrest Gump and Blazing Saddles. Spade is not a dumb person and when I have heard him speak he seems to be intelligent and articulate. Why then, is every single character including his own, written so poorly? Why is every character represented as a hayseed with the brain power of hamster and what is Brittany Daniel doing in these films? She seems to be smarter than the material she has been given (which is not saying much), but she appears to be seemingly intelligent, as well. Why write characters that are obnoxious, dumb, lazy and offensively stupid with no point, whatsoever? There is a point to how intentionally dumb film can be before it crosses the line into utter trash.

How Spade has managed to bring not only the lovely Daniel along, but also he drags Christopher Walken, Adam Beach, Dennis Miller, Mark McGrath and Patrick Warburton through the mud, too. I know they agreed to be in both films but still, give them something to do. ¬†Aside from Brittany Daniel’s character of Brandy, there is not a single character that you can relate to. Not ONE. Joe Dirt and Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser are interchangeably stupid and without any real saving grace. They are both overly long and a complete waste of anyone’s time. These films are not funny, have no class and I was stunned to find out there is a cult following for this madness. Who is the target audience for this crap? Spade has shown he can be good in shows like Just Shoot Me and some of his films. He has an acerbic wit and can be clever. Why he would create such monstrosities like these two films is beyond me. Joe Dirt and Joe Dirt 2 are the bottom of the barrel for everyone involved. Joe Dirt 2 has debuted on the Crackle Network for free and I am sure you could track down a free viewing on You Tube for the first Joe Dirt. Even for free however, these films suck more than a Hoover Deluxe.
