Avengers Age of Ultron Movie Review (by the Movie Slackers)

After a three year wait, Avengers Age of Ultron burts onto screens. Joss Whedon is back as writer and director and he has given us a larger than life, exciting film.

Just about every character returns and this time we have Quicksliver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) who are the latest additions. As Russian twins who lost their parents when a Tony Stark bomb took out their apartment building, they have their own score to settle so it stands to reason that they would side with Ultron (voiced by James Spader). Ultron is truly a diabolical villian but not without his sense of dark humor. But Avengers has a heavy dose of humor for just about all of the characters and it is spread out pretty evenly.

The plot, Ultron destroying the world, is pretty much a set up for endlessly fun and exciting action sequences that seem to destroy every city they take place in. But there are strong characters here and they are interesting and very well written. Whedon gives the characters life and vitality and they infuse this film with energy and style. Everything jumps off the screen and there is not a dull moment.

We get to see some more backdrop to Hawkeye’s character with his wife, Laura (sweetly played by Linda Cardellini) and a budding romantic relationship between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and David Banner (Mark Ruffalo), which is also poignant and believable. Whedon knows he does not need to oversell their relationship. All of the characters are well played and have chemistry to burn.

I would not try to follow too much of the intricacies of the plot involving the sceptor from the last film and what powers it. About the only thing you need to know is that Ultron is bent on world domination from resetting the clock to day one. When Thor says that there is no need to break anything. “Clearly, you’ve never made an omelet .”  It is this kind of fresh writing that films and audiences are starving for and Avengers is chock full of this and you will love every minute of it.

I was surprised to see that Avengers boasts two film score composers, Brian Tyler and Danny Elfman, to come up with a tremendous score for Avengers. The first Avenegers had Alan Silvestri composing the score. This time around, Tyler and Elfman have composed an orchestral and pleasingly loud score, that punctuates the action beautifully but it also enlightens the quieter moments, as well. This is worth purchasing when it becomes available.

Avengers officially kicks off the summer with a thunderous explosion of lush visuals, loads of flashy action, terrific performances, an intelligently witty script and solid direction from Joss Whedon. Fans of Marvel will not be disappointed and anyone who loved the first Avengers will love this one. This is one fun, freshly inventive and captivating film and it is family friendly (aside from a couple of expletives).

It does not matter how you see Avengers Age of Ultron. Whether it be 2D or 3D, the film is teaming with life and the kind of grandiose entertainment we have come to expect with films of this type. Even though the originality has kind of worn off, there is still enough entertainment here for another two films. As I write this, IMDB reports that they will shoot the next two films in this series, back to back over nine months. I hope they don’t rush this, too much and make a mess. I can wait another three years for the next one, as hard as that may be. As long as it is done right. With this team in front of and behind the camera, they can’t go wrong.

Avengers Age of Ultron – rated PG-13 for action sequences, adult situations and language – Run time – 2 1/2 hours
